Lee Sangsin, a research fellow and polling expert at the Korea Institute for National Unification (Kinu), noted Cho’s “compelling back-story” as a famous student protester jailed in the 1980s under the country’s former authoritarian regime. Cho went on to be a star professor at the country’s most prestigious university.  “Cho was like the gifinal K-pop idol, with looks, intelligence and morality on his side,” said Lee. “Now he is presenting himself as the country’s Luke Skywalker, with Yoon cast in the role of Darth Vader — it’s a narrative that many liberal Koreans find hard to resist.”

이상신 통일연구원 연구위원 겸 여론조사 전문가는 조씨의 “강력한 뒷이야기”를 1980년대 옛 권위주의 정권 하에서 투옥되었던 유명한 학생 시위자로 언급했다. 조씨는 이후 국내 최고 명문 대학의 스타 교수가 됐다. 이씨는 “조씨는 외모, 지성, 도덕성을 모두 갖춘 원조 K팝 아이돌 같았다”고 말했다. "이제 그는 자신을 국가의 루크 스카이워커로 소개하고 있으며, 윤씨는 다스 베이더 역을 맡았습니다. 이는 많은 한국 진보주의자들이 거부하기 어려운 이야기입니다."
